On April 7th, we celebrate National Day Against Bullying and Violence in Schools. Bullying is a concerning reality both inside and outside schools, and combating it starts with education, respect, and dialogue.
According to the director of Maple Bear Vitória, Bethânia Barcelos Lorençon - a bilingual institution that adopts a practical and humanized methodology - preparing children and adolescents for a more empathetic world is an essential part of the school's mission.
The Netflix series Adolescência reinforces this discussion by portraying the challenges faced by young people and the emotional impacts of bullying. "The program shows how the lack of support and guidance can lead to profound consequences, making it even more evident the importance of a school environment that prioritizes the well-being of students," highlights the director.
Bethânia emphasizes that at Maple Bear, the encouragement of understanding others and the development of socio-emotional skills are stimulated from childhood.
"Our classrooms are environments of bilingual immersion and constant learning. The spaces are spacious and stimulating, organized to enhance content absorption and immersion in the English language, but also to reinforce the search for and construction of knowledge," she explains. There are various classes and practical activities that encourage social interactions.
Combating bullying is a constant action that involves teachers, students, and families. "We want our students to become conscious citizens, capable of building healthy relationships and intervening when they witness any situation of disrespect," concludes the director. The school needs to be a safe space for everyone, where learning goes beyond the academic curriculum and includes fundamental values such as respect and inclusion," she affirms.
