Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide and in Brazil. It currently accounts for about 28% of new cancer cases in women, according to data from Inca. Of the 704,000 new cancer cases each year, during the three-year period 2023-2025, 70% of cases are expected to be in the South and Southeast regions, with the South at 71.44 per 100,000 and the Southeast at 84.46 per 100,000. In the month of October, the Pink October campaign takes place, raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of the disease, its treatments, and the high cure rate. Among the process of breast cancer, treatment, and recovery, there is a stage that involves plastic surgery, the reconstructive surgery. "It is when we reconstruct the breast of patients who have undergone amputation," explains plastic surgeon and member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), Humberto Pinto. Silicone implant surgery is performed for the aesthetics and well-being of the patient. "Many of them undergo mastectomy, but some may still have some part of the breast preserved, so we can perform breast reconstruction using flaps of skin from the side, or even fat grafts taken from other parts of the body," says the doctor. Everything is very simple, due to the advancement of technology and the modernity of equipment today. "It is essential to have special care for this audience, as this is a moment to regain confidence and self-esteem, in addition to helping the person improve the way they see their own body," says the doctor.
