Influencer Andressa Urach underwent a surgery on her tongue, known as bifurcated tongue. The procedure that splits the tongue in half is also nicknamed 'snake tongue'.
The Dentist, Periodontist, and Clinical Director of IOS – Instituto Odontológico, Dr. Marlei Bonella, raises alerts about the importance of the organ and the procedure performed: "The tongue plays an important role in articulating words during speech, modulating the airflow to produce different speech sounds, assists in chewing food, and helps in the process of swallowing food and liquids by pushing the food bolus to the throat," she says.
For her, the surgery is not recommended. "The taste buds located on the tongue are connected to nerve endings that transmit sensations of sweet, salty, bitter, and sour, and this can be affected," she says.
Furthermore, the surgery can make it difficult to clean the tongue, leading to the accumulation of food residues, causing bad breath and the spread of bacteria to other parts of the body," highlights Marlei.
The risks that may arise present more challenges than benefits, both for oral health and overall well-being.
