The number of probable chikungunya cases in Brazil more than doubled at the beginning of this year compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
By February 20, 35,569 probable cases had been recorded, an increase of 110%. The states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo reported the highest percentage increases.
According to chronic pain specialist André Felix, chikungunya is a complex and still poorly understood entity, and about 40% of patients develop chronic pain that can persist for months or even years after the initial infection, significantly compromising quality of life.
Treatment for chronic pain may include medication therapy, interdisciplinary approaches, and sympathetic venous blockade, which can be an option for desensitization, the doctor explains.
