One Hundred Digital Outlets Say No to Betting Ads

An initiative led by Agência Pública and other digital outlets brought together over 100 media organizations in a joint editorial. Launched on July 21, the initiative "Aqui não tem propaganda de bets" aimed to set the agenda within the press regarding journalism's responsibility for the ads it publishes. Initially, 15 outlets – Agência Lupa, Agência Pública, Alma Preta, Amado Mundo, Aos Fatos, Manual do Usuário, Matinal, Meio, Mobile Time, My News, Notícia Preta, NeoFeed, Plural, Portal IMPRENSA, and Reset – signed the joint editorial, calling on other sites to participate.

By early September, more than 100 outlets from across Brazil had joined the initiative. Among them are the sites Conexão Planeta, Finsiders Brasil, Falando de Tech, Central do Varejo, Click Guarulhos, and Portal Meu Amazonas.

According to the joint editorial, "journalism must be, above all, committed to the public interest."

It continues: "Our role is to defend society and, therefore, to investigate and independently denounce the undue power of the sector and demand stricter rules from authorities regarding advertising and the operation of betting companies. By accepting to advertise online gambling, we believe we would be contradicting information rigorously investigated by our teams."

"The seriousness of the current epidemic that has particularly vulnerable populations, especially the poorest, cannot be relativized due to commercial interests, under penalty of undermining the credibility of journalism," it concludes.

Amid the electoral campaign, the Lula government is preparing a provisional measure to prohibit betting in the country. The measure is expected to be signed this Friday, according to information from Alicia Klein's column on UOL.

Legalized in 2018 and regulated in 2023, during the current government, the online betting sector reportedly took R$ 62.5 billion from the budgets of Brazilian families in 2025, according to a study by the National Committee of State Finance Secretaries and the Federal District (Comsefaz).

In the same year, the federal government collected R$ 9.16 billion in taxes.
