After actress Ana Beatriz Nogueira discovered she has lung cancer, the topic has resurfaced and some questions have arisen. One of the most recurring ones is whether smokers are more likely to develop cancer. Can Covid worsen the situation and cause cancer?

According to pulmonologist Jessica Polese, what has been happening is that people think lung cancer cases have increased, but this is not true. "What happens is that since Covid affects the respiratory systems, more patients are getting CT scans of the organ, and they are discovering small tumors earlier, as happened with the actress," explains the doctor.

Regarding smokers, 85% of diagnosed lung cancer cases are associated with tobacco use. "According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), smoking and passive exposure to tobacco are significant risk factors for the development of lung cancer," states Jessica.

It is important to be aware of symptoms such as chronic cough, hoarseness, shortness of breath, and persistent pneumonia. "The body gives signs that something is not right; it is essential to see a doctor for prevention," says the pulmonologist.

"In times of pandemic, with the confusion still being made regarding flu, viruses, pneumonia, any factor that raises the alert should lead to seeking a specialist for the appropriate medication and treatment," emphasizes the doctor.
