Greenish hair after the pool? Here’s what to do!

A refreshing dip in the pool during summer can turn into a nightmare for blondes, as there is a high chance that their hair will acquire the dreaded greenish color. This happens because hair in this shade is more prone to having open cuticles and greater porosity, which favors the absorption of chemical substances, such as chlorine. However, our hair stylist from Be Spa, Ana Paula Leite, has the golden tip: ketchup. The explanation lies in colorimetry: “The copper sulfate present in chlorine has a bluish color and, when it comes into contact with yellowed hair, it leaves that unwanted greenish tone. The red in ketchup neutralizes the color of the residues present in the water,” explains the specialist.

However, greenish hair draws attention to damaged and porous strands. Ana Paula Leite explains that chlorine removes the natural protection, and as a result, the outcome goes far beyond the greenish tone. The reaction stems from the weakening and drying of the strands, which is why it is important to reinforce hair care even more. “Without the protective layer, chlorine reacts directly with the pigmentation and proteins of the hair, causing the greenish impression. When the strands are porous, it is a sign that they are losing proteins, water, and nutrients,” she warns.
