The new InfoGripe Bulletin, released this Thursday (6/27), indicated that 10 states show signs of increasing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), including Espírito Santo. The current scenario of rising SARS in the country is fundamentally due to influenza A viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinoviruses. Among the capitals, Vitória is on the list of those experiencing an increase in respiratory syndromes.
According to pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist Jessica Polese, this period is critical because the circulation of viruses and bacteria increases, and vaccines are the main means of protection against illnesses. “Vaccination is a way to prevent a flu or cold from turning into pneumonia, and there is still the possibility of contracting Covid, so it is important to keep the vaccination schedule up to date,” points out the pulmonologist.
According to the doctor, during this colder period, the incidence of respiratory diseases increases due to the drier climate and temperature drops that reduce air humidity, which can worsen pre-existing allergies and favor the spread of respiratory infections, especially due to the concentration of pollutants in the air. “The most common diseases during this period include flu, colds, bronchiolitis, sinusitis, throat inflammation, and pneumonia.
To avoid these illnesses, specific precautions are recommended: “It is essential to keep environments clean, both at work and at home, especially by removing accumulated dust that can trigger allergic reactions. Proper hydration is essential to help keep the respiratory pathways moist, while ventilation of spaces contributes to the circulation of fresh air, reducing the proliferation of microorganisms,” emphasizes the pulmonologist. With the frequent spread of viral infections due to temperature variations – one day cold, another hot – or even the same variations in a single day, it is common for them to evolve into bacterial infections, increasing the severity of symptoms,” she says.
