During vacations, many of us long for a refreshing break, a well-deserved rest, and the opportunity to recharge our energies. However, during vacations, sleep does not always meet expectations.
According to Sleep Medicine Specialist Jessica Polese, during vacations people lose track of time and end up losing sleep, waking up later and taking afternoon naps. “The apparent freedom from the alarm clock and the absence of morning commitments can suggest irregular sleep patterns,” says the doctor. Lost sleep is never recovered. “Sleep occurs in cycles, including stages of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement). Losing a specific part of these cycles can interfere with sleep quality. This gap between a night of sleep and the quality that is lost can take days or more to recover. The impact of this situation is reflected in cognitive performance.
“Sleep plays a crucial role in health and longevity. It is fundamental to cognitive function and memory consolidation. During sleep, the brain processes the day's information and strengthens neural connections important for learning and memory storage,” emphasizes Jessica.
Good sleep quality improves concentration, boosts the immune system, helps the body produce proteins that fight infections and inflammation, strengthening the body's defenses; deep sleep aids in regulating blood pressure, preserving heart and blood vessel health, preventing cardiovascular problems; and also regulates hormones.
Therefore, rest during this period, have fun, but try to get a good night's sleep.
