Understand what it is and how this surgery works
Blepharoplasty is the term used for eyelid surgery. This procedure is recommended for those who have excess skin on the eyelids and difficulty seeing due to this excess skin. The procedure can be performed on both men and women.
During the surgery, excess skin and fat are removed, such as bags and wrinkles, giving the patient's eyes a younger and less tired appearance. The procedure can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. There is no specific age considered ideal for the procedure, but the appropriate time is indicated by the patient and doctor.
According to Dr. Letícia Rizzo from the Gaia Integrated Medicine Institute (IMEG), by undergoing this procedure, the patient not only achieves facial rejuvenation but also improves their quality of life.
How is blepharoplasty performed?
Blepharoplasty is a minor surgery performed under local anesthesia, with or without sedation. The procedure lasts from one to two hours on average, and the patient is discharged on the same day of the procedure – meaning there are few impacts for the many associated benefits.
The risks associated with this type of surgery are similar to those of other minor interventions, such as: bruising (purple) around the eyes, swelling, numbness, tearing, and bleeding. However, it is worth noting that although these risks are possible, the incidence is generally low.
According to the doctor, after the procedure, the patient can return to work in a week, and physical activity can be resumed in three weeks. Another recommendation is to avoid sun exposure for 30 days.
The results of eyelid surgery are visible in 4 weeks and last for several years, and in some cases, they are permanent.
"The scar from this surgery is quite discreet, often blending in with the natural folds of the eyelids. Due to being a region with thinner skin, the quality of healing is high, and after approximately 3 months, the scars become practically imperceptible," explains Dr. Letícia Rizzo.
