Those who were not familiar with the concept of homeschooling came to know it after the pandemic began, and the term refers to the proposal of education conducted in the domestic or home environment. We have been adapting children's study spaces for some time now, as well as our own workspaces at home. There is no scheduled end date for this format, nor do we know if it will truly come to an end, as some practices will remain as a legacy of this pandemic.
The adaptations for homeschooling should be designed according to the routine of each child or teenager, and should focus on providing comfort through ergonomics, good lighting, and ventilation in the environment, making the school routine more pleasant and easier.
"It is very important to choose a place to organize and store all school materials, so that everything is within reach to facilitate tasks, generating positive results and preventing the child from getting distracted," said architect Luana Amaral from Ala arquitetura.
Luana also mentioned that for younger children, there should be a concern to design a safe place where they can spend time alone, completing their tasks without the need for parental supervision, with the aim of providing autonomy in their studies.
An important point of attention she mentioned was that in these projects, sharp corners, tall furniture, items with wheels, and sharp objects should be avoided to prevent accidents with little ones.
Architect Aline Lacerda stated that during the pandemic, a change that has been requested is about flexibility and functionality within the home. "In recent months, people have noticed the importance of not designing the house in sectors. We are living in a time when the flexibility and functionality of a house has become the main request. We have started to create spaces according to the activities of each person, emphasizing the importance of meeting their overall needs," she said.
"We are increasingly designing multifunctional environments that are connected to daily life, study, work, and leisure. For example, a balcony that can serve as a homeschooling space, while also hosting and gathering the family," she added.
Aline mentioned that with the emergence of these new trends, where school and work have moved into the home, projects are very focused on ease of sanitation, creating a transition space between the street and the home. The entrance hall has gained a discreet shoe rack, turning into a little corner for sanitizing before entering the house, for example.
