The second blast furnace of ArcelorMittal Tubarão, one of three installed at the company, will be restarted on July 26 of this month. The equipment, with a production capacity of 1.2 million tons of pig iron per year, has been idle since last year, when it underwent extensive maintenance reform and remained inactive due to instability in the national and international economic scenarios.
In addition to it, Blast Furnace 1 continues to operate at the plant, which has a production capacity of 3.5 million tons per year. The third equipment was shut down in April of this year and will remain out of operation, awaiting possible changes in the economic scenario and steel demand in Brazil and worldwide.
Professionals from other countries within the ArcelorMittal Group are assisting in the restart process. The return of Blast Furnace 2 will primarily serve the external market, whose customers are gradually resuming consumption, and to ensure the operational optimization of the plant.
As it has done throughout its operations since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the restart process of Blast Furnace 2 at ArcelorMittal Tubarão is strictly following all guidelines and protocols recommended by health authorities to control the spread of COVID-19 among its employees and third parties. This includes, among other actions, safety distance in all control rooms, with floor markings to signal; safe distancing in collective environments, including cafeterias and vehicles, reinforcement of cleaning actions in internal spaces, and disinfection of shared tools using UV-C lamps.
Additionally, the company continues to implement teleworking for administrative functions, distribution of fabric masks for use on public transport and inside the plant, temperature measurement for everyone accessing the company, provision of extensive psychosocial support to families, and intensification of informative campaigns (over 200 advertising pieces and 20 informative videos).
