In order to accelerate care, MedAssist, a telemedicine app, was created to optimize the time of patients and doctors
The lack of access to specialized healthcare is a global issue. With the onset of the pandemic, all sectors had to adapt, including medicine, whose demand is exponential every day. Thus, consultations and diagnoses became virtual, facilitating the daily lives of patients and healthcare professionals. [caption id="attachment_38343" align="alignright" width="300"]

With this in mind, orthopedic surgeon Nilo Neto is heading to Lisbon, Portugal, to participate in WebSummit 2022, the largest technology conference in Europe, where he will present a success case: MedAssist, a software for expert opinions designed asynchronously, in which the specialist's knowledge is incorporated into the source code, providing structured consultations with a high resolution rate.
In the software, founded by the company MedTi - led by the orthopedic surgeon and in the market for 6 years - one specialist covers a population of up to 4.5 million people with a resolution rate of 95%. "Since 2018, when the platform became active, there have been 17,000 consultations, which reduced patients' journeys by more than 77,000 hours, representing a savings of R$ 12 million in removals, in addition to avoiding 650 tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere," said the orthopedic surgeon.
It is worth noting that thousands of people leave their cities daily and are transported by ambulances seeking specialized care in reference hospitals due to fractures and traumas. "This causes pain and a long journey for patients, leaves a carbon footprint, and impacts the financial operation of healthcare. This is not a sustainable or effective way to deliver healthcare," the doctor emphasized.
Traditionally, there are two options for this problem: hiring an on-call specialist, which is not expensive and not always available for the hospital; or implementing teleconsultation to offer specialized opinions. This second option is excellent but costly and impossible to scale quickly due to its synchronous nature. "That’s why MedAssist emerged as a way to optimize the time of doctors and patients," he reinforced.
Government Incentive
Due to the success of the app, MedTi, Nilo Neto's company, was selected by SEEDES, the first public startup acceleration program in Espírito Santo, aimed at fostering the development of innovative companies and ideas. The program selected MedAssist for its development. The joint work will begin in December this year.
"The future of healthcare lies in intelligent design software in which specialized knowledge is part of the source code, enabling the widespread dissemination of specialized knowledge. Only then will telemedicine become a pillar of the healthcare system. For this, government or corporate incentives are necessary for those involved with social responsibility who wish to see an increase in access to healthcare in the country," concluded Nilo Neto.
