During pregnancy, care for the mother and baby is intense, so it is important to stay alert about oral health. Dentist Catarina Riva warns about pregnancy gingivitis, which can lead to premature birth and influence the baby's weight.
She explains that the disease is characterized by swelling, changes in gum color, bad breath, and gum bleeding when chewing and brushing teeth, which may be related to nutritional deficiencies and high hormone levels, such as progesterone and estrogen, that can contribute to increased blood flow in the gum tissues, favoring inflammation. As a result, the area becomes more swollen and susceptible to bleeding, promoting the growth of certain bacteria that cause gingivitis.
“The recommendation is to consult the dentist as early as the first months of pregnancy for evaluation and cleaning of the teeth, as these bacteria can escape into the bloodstream and settle in the placenta - the tissue that surrounds the baby in the womb - causing premature birth and low birth weight,” clarifies Catarina.
The most recommended treatment is the removal of bacterial plaque and oral hygiene, with at least three brushings a day, the use of very thin dental floss, and alcohol-free mouthwash.
