Allergies to permanent tattoos can appear even after years

>> Cases can be treated with medications, but in some situations, even laser removal of the tattoo or surgery may be necessary.

You may have heard someone mention that they had an allergy to something they had never had a problem with before, right? Allergic reactions do not always occur the first time you are exposed to a certain food or product; they appear without warning! They can develop at any time: immediately, weeks, or even decades later.

According to allergist Karla Delevedove, the cause of allergies in cases of permanent tattoos is associated with the pigment used to imprint it on the skin. For example, if you have had 3 or 4 tattoos without any issues, you may have an allergic reaction to the ink the next time you get a tattoo, or even with your very first tattoo. This is explained by the mechanism of this allergy being a delayed reaction of the contact dermatitis type.

"Tattoo pigments can cause contact dermatitis and photoallergic dermatitis, mainly due to the red pigment, which contains mercury (cinnabar). The pigments are composed of both salts and inorganic metals, such as mercury (red), chromium (green), manganese (purple), cobalt (blue), cadmium (yellow), iron hydrate (ochre), as well as organic preparations, such as sandalwood and brazilwood (reds), and in all of them we are subject to allergic reactions," said the doctor.

The two most common hypersensitivity reactions to tattoo pigments are allergic contact dermatitis and photoallergic dermatitis. The reaction usually appears as a red, inflamed area that may sometimes peel.

It is important to mention that hypersensitivity reactions to pigments used for black, blue, purple, and green tattoos are much less common, but they do exist.

The doctor warned about people who suffer from atopic dermatitis, as the chances of developing tattoo allergy are even higher, since these patients already have alterations in skin protection.

To identify a possible tattoo allergy, Karla said you should be attentive to the onset of symptoms such as redness, swelling, itching, "bumps," and peeling at the tattoo site. The design tends to become damaged, disproportionate, faded, or raised.

"Identifying the symptoms, it is important to seek an allergist immediately, as treatment should be initiated. Generally, oral antihistamines, creams with corticosteroids, and hydration are recommended. In some cases, tattoo removal with laser or even surgery may be necessary," she warned.

The more colorful and deeper the tattoos are, the harder they will be to remove. If it is your desire to get a tattoo, it is important to check if the inks used are non-toxic and approved by Anvisa, as this minimizes potential problems.
