In July, the 'Green July' campaign encourages awareness about the prevention and fight against head and neck cancer. Unfortunately, a lack of information can delay the search for medical assistance, worsening the disease.
The signs of head and neck cancer can manifest in the oral cavity, face, and oropharyngeal region. Symptoms may include non-healing sores in the mouth, lumps or bumps in the neck, difficulty swallowing or chewing, persistent hoarseness, and persistent sore throat.
According to Dr. Marlei Bonella, a Dentist, Periodontist, and Clinical Director of IOS – Instituto Odontológico, the Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) supports the movement, highlighting the role of dentists in prevention. "During routine check-ups, we are always attentive to any changes that may indicate the presence of lesions, infections, and if treated in time, significantly increase the chances of cure," explains Marlei. One of the treatments indicated today is laser therapy, which treats canker sores and lesions in the mouth, providing comfort and safety for patients. "Early diagnosis can assist in the prevention of head and neck cancer and in treatment if necessary," she adds.
Marlei suggests routine visits to the dentist and healthy habits such as avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.
