Zero Waste Week 2024 Instituto Movive promotes educational actions for composting and sustainability From October 25 to November 3, Brazil celebrates Zero Waste Week, an initiative led by the Instituto Lixo Zero Brasil (ILZB). In Vitória, Instituto Movive, in partnership with MP Publicidade, has registered two actions that will take place on October 30 and 31, focusing on environmental awareness and the practice of composting, aiming to contribute to a more sustainable city. The activities promoted by the project Barra Limpa Rumo ao Lixo Zero gained prominence last year and, in 2024, promise to further engage the community. October 30 – Visit to the Composting and Agroecology Space The first action, titled Barra Limpa Rumo ao Lixo Zero, takes place on Wednesday, October 30, and is aimed at 90 students from Escola Dr. Tuffy Nader, located in Barra do Jucu, in Vila Velha. The project began in March 2023, with meetings alongside the community, culminating in the inauguration of a space dedicated to composting during last year's Zero Waste Week. According to the director of MP and a volunteer at Movive, Marília Debbané, "composting transforms organic waste into fertilizer, it is a cheap, feasible, and truly transformative process, it is a fundamental tool for working with communities, it is a tool for working with the being, the human being,” she says. The space, located on Rua Gaivotas, was designed to promote the practice and is now expanding to include agroecology initiatives. In parallel, Escola Dr. Tuffy Nader will also start its own composting and garden space, complementing an existing action at the school. Educator Heloisa Carvalho will lead a discussion on the importance of waste separation, emphasizing the use of organic waste and the generation of high-quality fertilizer. Marília Debbané explains the relevance of the action: “We are forming conscious citizens from an early age. These children will grow up understanding the positive impact that composting can have on the environment and on people's lives,” she says. Additionally, the students will participate in a guided visit to the Composting and Agroecology space, where the fourth composting pile is already being fed. The fertilizer resulting from the process will be used both at the school and in the community. There will be the ‘bucket drop’ for the children to experience this beginning of the process. On October 31, Escola Municipal Dr. Tuffy Nader will host educational activities involving students and teachers in the commitment to sustainability.   Activities on October 31: educational booth and school garden On October 31, Thursday, from 8 AM to 11 AM, the inauguration of a self-explanatory booth called "Know that there is no secret in Separating Waste" will take place, which will be set up by the students of Escola Municipal Dr. Tuffy Nader. The proposal is to teach, in a practical way, the separation of waste into three categories: dry, organic, and reject. The project will initially involve 90 students from the fourth grades of the morning shift, in a school with approximately 1000 students. The planned actions for the day include: - Setting up the "Waste Separation" booth: the students will organize the booth with properly separated waste. - Inauguration of the composting space and school garden: the students will participate in the "Bucket Drop," symbolizing the beginning of the use of the new space dedicated to composting. - Planting 14 yellow ipê seedlings: the seedlings - donated by the company Kebis - from Domingos Martins, will be planted around the garden, in an area near Rodovia do Sol, promoting environmental awareness and beautifying the area. Composting at the school is already an established practice, reinforced this year by the project Barra Limpa Rumo ao Lixo Zero. In addition to working with waste separation, the project seeks to integrate the school community in actions that promote the concept of Zero Waste in a practical and accessible way. Marília highlights the importance of community engagement: "It is essential that these values are incorporated from an early age,” she states.
