Classic heatstroke may have been the cause of death

Following the death of the young Taylor Swift fan, who was 23 years old and fell ill after spending an entire day in extreme heat in Rio de Janeiro, a preliminary report indicated small hemorrhages in her lungs.

As the final result will only be released in 30 days, there is debate about what may have really caused it, whether the high temperature in the city – due to the heatwave – may have affected her and caused the discomfort that led to the cardiorespiratory arrest.

According to pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, Jessica Polese, the increase in global temperatures and associated heatwaves have raised important concerns among health professionals. “We are worried about the possible emergence of new diseases associated with heatwaves, and this is not limited to the immediate effects of extreme heat, but also includes long-term consequences for public health,” explains the doctor. We may experience extreme heatstrokes, acute respiratory diseases, heat stress, etc.

Speaking of extreme heatstroke related to what happened to the young woman, we can mention classic heatstroke, which is generally observed in children, people with chronic diseases, or the elderly, who are exposed to excessively hot environments.

“People with classic heatstroke sweat little or not at all and present the following respiratory signs and symptoms: tachypnea (increased respiratory rate), increased minute volume, and respiratory alkalosis (occurs when the respiratory system eliminates CO2 faster than it is produced). In severe cases, classic heatstroke can trigger pulmonary edema, pulmonary infarction, or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS),” points out the doctor. Jessica also reports that exertional heatstroke can occur:

“Exertional or exercise-induced heatstroke occurs in people who have engaged in intense physical activities in a very hot environment. People with exertional heatstroke sweat profusely and present symptoms that can progress to severe cases. “The main diagnostic criteria for heatstroke are a rectal temperature of 40º C or higher and signs of neurological impairment (such as confusion or decreased consciousness),” explains the doctor.
