World Pneumonia Day is celebrated annually today, November 12, with the aim of raising awareness about this serious respiratory disease and promoting preventive measures to combat it.
According to Dr. Roberta Melotti - Pediatric Pneumologist at Florescer Kids Mais, a Children's Rehabilitation Clinic located in Praia da Costa, Vila Velha, pneumonia is an infection in the lungs that can be caused by different agents, such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It affects people of all ages, with children under 5 years old and elderly individuals over 65 being the most vulnerable.
The symptoms of pneumonia include high fever, persistent cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and extreme fatigue. If not properly treated, it can lead to serious complications and even death.
Prevention is key to combating pneumonia. Simple measures, such as maintaining hand hygiene, getting vaccinated against diseases like influenza and pneumococcus, avoiding smoking, and ensuring a clean and ventilated environment, can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
