Sea, pool, and many sunny days. Summer has ended a while ago and is already missed, but with the end of this period, it's also time to pay more attention to hair, which suffers a bit more during that season and deserves a boost in post-summer care.
“With summer, the routine ends up being different and hair feels the effects of the season. People go to the beach and pool more often. Sea water contains salt and iodine. Pool water has chlorine and copper sulfate. These components alter the hair cuticle and make it weaker. Additionally, they tie and wash their hair more, have more exposure to the sun and wind, and all of this interferes with hair health,” commented pharmacist and trichologist Cristal Bastos.
Dermatologist Christina Drummond, who is in Europe participating in a fellowship in medical trichology, explains that ultraviolet light affects the hair cuticle, leading to the degradation of proteins and keratin. Hair becomes dry, dull, and brittle. Moreover, solar radiation on the scalp predisposes to post-summer hair loss, known as seasonal alopecia. So what can be done to recover these strands and the scalp?
“Using milder shampoos; moisturizing hair more; avoiding very hot showers; exposing hair less to the sun by applying specific products, such as leave-in with sun protection; reducing the frequency of using a hairdryer; getting therapeutic cuts; and using quality products are measures that will restore life and health to the hair,” advised the doctor.
She also emphasizes that the most important thing is to protect hair and the scalp with a hat, take care of follicle health with a healthy diet, and avoid smoking. “Consultation with a specialist doctor is essential for a correct diagnosis and the early start of treatment, as scarring alopecias lead to irreversible hair loss.”
Even taking care of hair during summer, which is ideal, it can lose its shine, develop split ends, and feel abrasive. Therefore, according to Cristal Bastos, once the season is over, it’s time to nourish, hydrate, strengthen, and repair the strands affected by UV rays, restoring softness and shine to the hair.
