Dry Scalp: Expert Explains Why This Happens and How to Treat It

Itching, irritation, redness, burning, and a tight sensation are symptoms that indicate a dry scalp. But why does this happen? Often, this problem is genetic, but it can also be caused by external factors and incorrect habits, such as excessive use of a hairdryer close to the roots, improper shampoos, washing hair too many times a day, and even stress and hormonal changes, for example.

Another aggravating factor that can leave the scalp dry is very hot showers. “It is an enemy for those who suffer from the problem, as the high water temperature further dries out the scalp and opens the hair cuticles. This dryness can cause a lot of itching and make the scalp painful,” explained pharmacist and trichologist Cristal Bastos.

She also warned that the hair's base becomes weakened, and hair grows slowly, becoming brittle, dull, and dry-looking, resulting in significant hair loss. This dryness can be confused with dandruff because the affected area shows flaking. “In other words, it has small flakes of skin that end up lodging along the hair strand,” she clarified.

In addition to seeking a specialized professional who can identify the causes and treat the problem from the beginning, Cristal recommends some care: “avoid very hot showers; use moisturizing shampoo; steer clear of deep cleansing products that further dry out the area; wash hair fewer times a week to prevent the natural oiliness from being removed by water; and drink plenty of water daily.”
