The connection between oral health and well-being

On March 20, we celebrate World Oral Health Day, an essential date to reinforce the importance of prevention and access to quality dental treatments. In 2025, the campaign by the World Dental Federation (FDI) continues with the theme 'A happy mouth is... a happy mind.' The goal is to raise awareness of how oral health directly influences mental well-being and quality of life.

According to Implantologist and Clinical Director of IOS – Instituto Odontológico, Dr. Marlei Bonella, the relationship between the mouth and the mind is often underestimated: 'Chronic tooth pain, gum infections, and tooth loss can impact the patient's emotional state, causing stress, anxiety, and even depression. Therefore, taking care of oral health is also a way to take care of mental health,' she emphasizes.

There are many studies also linking periodontal disease as a risk factor for chronic neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

'The bacterium P. gingivalis, a key pathogen of periodontal disease, has been found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients,' explains Marlei.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease may have difficulty maintaining proper oral hygiene. Therefore, preventive consultations with a Periodontist and keeping oral health up to date is essential.

Studies indicate that individuals with good oral health tend to report better quality of life and fewer episodes of stress. Proper chewing, for example, improves digestion and nutrient absorption, essential factors for the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter of well-being. Additionally, problems such as bruxism and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain are directly linked to emotional tension.

'An effective oral hygiene routine, with regular brushing, flossing, and periodic visits to the dentist, is essential to maintain not only a beautiful smile but also a more balanced and healthy mental state,' reinforces Dr. Marlei.
